SEMAGLUTIDE

WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?

Semaglutide is an exciting science-based treatment for overweight. You may have heard about Wegovvy or Ozempic. Those are the 2 patented pharmaceutical forms of this powerful insulin sensitizer and appetite suppressant. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist and was first approved in the U.S. in 2017 to improve blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Once a week Semaglutide injections are also FDA-approved for patients who are having difficulty losing weight. The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of the STEP trial which revealed more than 50 percent of trial participants lost 15 percent of their body weight, and between 33 to 40 percent of participants lost 20 percent of their body weight. We’ve been using it with patients since 2017 and most are very satisfied with the appetite suppression and weight loss.

GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the small intestine that stimulates insulin secretion and inhibits glucagon secretion, thereby lowering blood sugar. It also slows gastric emptying. It was first discovered in Gila Monster lizards! Additionally, it effectively decreases appetite, curbs cravings, and therefore makes it easier to re-set your habits to a healthy lower calorie diet.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR SEMAGLUTIDE?

Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or higher and at least one weight-related condition like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes can benefit from Semaglutide. At VitaLab in La Jolla Semaglutide candidates also include obese men and women with a BMI higher than 30.

THE TREATMENT

Semaglutide is available by physician's prescription to members of our Science of Slim membership. It is an injection given once per week in our Med Spa. The dosage will be gradually increased during the course of your treatment. The patient may need to increase the dose to 2.4 mg of Semaglutide for sufficient weight loss. While taking Semaglutide La Jolla patients should also participate in regular physical activity and maintain a healthy, reduced-calorie diet, get support and accountability through coaching and weight check-ins, such as within our Science of Slim weight loss program.

With regular injections and a healthy lifestyle, patients can expect to lose 1-2 pounds each week! In clinical trials, the total weight lost for most patients was between 10-15% of their initial body weight, which is the recommended amount to reduce the risk of future illnesses.

Tirzepatide: A New Frontier in Weight Loss

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a novel medication that has shown significant promise in weight management. It works as a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, helping regulate blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss. This dual action makes Tirzepatide unique and highly effective compared to traditional weight loss treatments.

Benefits of Tirzepatide

  1. Significant Weight Loss: Clinical trials have demonstrated that Tirzepatide can lead to substantial weight loss in individuals with obesity or overweight, often surpassing the results seen with other weight loss medications.
  2. Improved Metabolic Health: Beyond weight loss, Tirzepatide helps improve various metabolic parameters, including blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.
  3. Reduced Appetite: By affecting hunger-regulating hormones, Tirzepatide can help reduce appetite and caloric intake, making it easier for individuals to adhere to a calorie-controlled diet.
  4. Enhanced Insulin Sensitivity: The medication improves insulin sensitivity, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes or those at risk of developing diabetes.

How Does Tirzepatide Work?

Tirzepatide's dual action targets two important hormonal pathways:

  • GIP Receptor Agonism: Enhances insulin secretion and inhibits glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner, improving postprandial glucose control.
  • GLP-1 Receptor Agonism: Slows gastric emptying, promotes satiety, and reduces appetite, contributing to weight loss and better blood sugar management.

Potential Side Effects

Like all medications, Tirzepatide may cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These are typically mild and tend to decrease over time as the body adjusts to the medication. It is essential to discuss any concerns with a healthcare provider to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks.
